Hon. Thomas J. Felts receives Outstanding Judge Award from the ISBA


INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 30, 2017) – Hon. Thomas J. Felts was selected as this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Judge Award by the Indiana State Bar Association Young Lawyers Section at its annual awards luncheon in Indianapolis on Aug. 30.


Felts is judge of the Allen Circuit Court, having been first elected to that position in November 2002. He was recently re-elected to a third term in office. Previously, Judge Felts served as magistrate of the Allen Circuit Court Family Relations Division (1989–2002) and was in private practice before that for more than 10 years in Fort Wayne. He received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and his J.D. from the I.U. Maurer School of Law in 1979.


Judge Felts has served as an adjunct professor at the Indiana Tech Law School and previously served as an adjunct professor at Purdue University – Fort Wayne. He has been a Moot Court Competition Judge at the I.U. Maurer School of Law for several years, and has additionally served numerous times as a lecturer for judges and attorneys in the areas of domestic relations, paternity, alternative dispute resolution, criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, professional responsibility, probation and judicial ethics. Judge Felts is a graduate of the Indiana Judicial College and the Indiana Graduate Program for Judges.


Judge Felts is an active member of the Indiana State Bar Association (past chair, House of Delegates; past member, Board of Governors; member, Leadership Development Academy Planning Committee; member, Improvements in the Judicial System, State Legislation, Wellness and Futures of the Provision of Legal Services committees). At the state level, he serves on the board of directors for the Indiana Bar Foundation, Indiana Judicial Conference and the Indiana Judges Association. Judge Felts is chair of the Indiana Judicial Conference Judicial Education Committee and also serves on the Indiana General Assembly Interim Committee on Courts and the Judiciary and the Indiana Supreme Court Strategic Planning Committee. At the local level, Judge Felts serves on the board of directors for several organizations, including the Allen County Community Corrections (vice chair), St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, Greater Fort Wayne Metropolitan YMCA, Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust and the Allen County Public Records Commission. He's also a past board member and officer of the Foellinger Foundation.


Judge Felts serves as a choir member and substitute liturgist at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. He is a member of the Allen County Republican Party, Fort Wayne Running Club, Knights of Columbus and the Greenway Consortium.
