Need-to-know: Malpractice Insurance

Question: Is your pro bono work covered by malpractice insurance?
Answer: It likely is, but you must first ask!

Many pro bono providers have malpractice insurance that covers their volunteers. If you are volunteering with a major pro bono organization, you are likely covered by their policy. The key is to first ask the organization if they have a group malpractice that covers volunteers.

Additionally, most individual malpractice insurance policies do cover pro bono work. Again, reach out to your provider before engaging in pro bono work if you are not sure.

The Pro Bono Academy and Resource Center is a joint project of the Indiana State Bar Association Pro Bono Committee and Leadership Development Academy Class 10. The ISBA is grateful for these groups and all pro bono volunteers who have dedicated their time and talents to serve those in need.
