Angelika E. Mueller receives ISBA David Hamacher Public Service Award

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 30, 2017) – Angelika E. Mueller’s significant contributions to public service work in Indiana were recognized at the Indiana State Bar Association’s annual awards luncheon in Indianapolis on Aug. 30, where she received the David Hamacher Public Service Award. This award, sponsored by the ISBA Appellate Practice Section, honors high moral character and ethical standards, service to the community and peacemaking qualities.

Mueller received her J.D., cum laude, from the I.U. Maurer School of Law in 1976. She has devoted her career to public service. Upon graduating law school, she worked in the Owen and Lawrence County prosecutor’s offices and developed the then-new child support enforcement divisions in each. In 1978, she returned to northern Indiana to join the predecessor firm of Indiana Legal Services, where she has remained. At Legal Services, she managed branch offices in Elkhart and then South Bend, Ind. She has felt fortunate to be able to represent vulnerable survivors of domestic violence, tenants taken advantage of by unscrupulous landlords, and persons mistakenly denied disability and other benefits. She is presently the deputy director of Indiana Legal Services.

Mueller has been active in the St. Joseph County Bar Association, serving on the board of governors as well as on the Bench & Bar and Pro Bono committees. She is a member of, and has been a delegate to, the Indiana State Bar Association. She also has been a member of the Grant Inns of Court since it was established.

Her community activities range from serving on a number of boards and task forces to volunteering at a soup kitchen. She is proud to have served on the founding board establishing the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County. She has previously served on boards and/or committees of the YWCA, United Way, Head Start, Logan Center Protective Services, Carousel Family Services, Inc., Community Coordinated Child Care, Inc. and others.

Founded in 1896, the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) is the single largest legal organization in the state. With nearly 12,000 members, the ISBA serves and advocates on behalf of its members, their clients and the public interest as the independent voice of the legal profession.
