ISBA recognized with national award for its Indiana Kids’ Election program

INDIANAPOLIS (May 10, 2017) – The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) has been selected as a winner of the 2017 LexisNexis Community & Educational Outreach Award by the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE) for its Indiana Kids' Election (IKE) program. This award honors outstanding public service and law-related education programs and will be presented at the NABE annual meeting in New York City on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Sponsored by the ISBA, Indiana Secretary of State and the Indiana Department of Education, IKE is a mock election program for grades K-12. Statewide, more than 250,000 Hoosier students cast their ballot to elect their own president, governor and senator on Nov. 8, 2016. Schools in all 92 counties participated in the election, which attempts to emulate the election process as closely as possible.

“This program sincerely demonstrated the legal community’s commitment to instilling the importance of voting in today’s youth,” said ISBA President Mitchell R. Heppenheimer of South Bend. “Lawyers are eager for opportunities like this one to give back to their communities, and I’m particularly proud of our members’ genuine enthusiasm for engaging with schools across the state.”

More about IKE

Under Indiana law, schools are required to give instruction on the election process two weeks preceding a general election for all students in grades 6-12. IKE, where the voting age is lowered to 5, helps Indiana teachers meet this requirement by providing comprehensive curriculum guides, free of charge, to participating schools. The curriculum meets current state academic standards as approved by the Indiana Department of Education.

Indiana attorneys also had the unique opportunity to participate in this program by volunteering for the IKE Speakers’ Bureau, where they delivered classroom presentations about the election process and the importance of voting.

This program was funded in part by the ISBA, Indiana Bar Foundation, Anthem and Duke Energy. To learn more about IKE, visit:
