Hon. Michael G. Gotsch Sr. receives ISBA Outstanding Judge Award


INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 30, 2015) – Hon. Michael G. Gotsch Sr. was selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Judge Award from the Indiana State Bar Association’s (ISBA) Young Lawyers Section. The award was presented at the ISBA’s annual meeting in French Lick earlier this month.


Judge Gotsch was appointed to the St. Joseph Circuit Court by Gov. Joe Kernan in 2004, and was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2010. Previously, he served as chief deputy prosecuting attorney and chief of staff in the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office (2003-04), and counsel for the St. Joseph County Office of Family and Children (2000-02). He also has prior professional experience as a deputy prosecutor attorney, corporate counsel for Meridian Title Corporation, and executive director for the Child Abuse Services, Investigation & Education Center. 

Judge Gotsch served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Award. He left active military service with the rank of Captain. 

Admitted to practice in Indiana, Michigan and federal courts, Judge Gotsch had the honor of serving as an official observer on the Uniform Parentage Act Drafting Committee of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law. He has also had the distinction to serve as a commissioner on the Presidential Task Force on Criminal Nonsupport, the Governor’s Task Force on Abused and Neglected Families and their Children, and the Governor’s Committee on the Indiana Child Support Tracking System. Judge Gotsch is an elected representative to the Judicial Conference of Indiana, serving as its liaison for judicial technology. He was appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court’s Committee to Study Evidence-Based Pretrial Release and the Indiana Judicial & Technology Committee.

Judge Gotsch is an adjunct faculty member at Notre Dame Law School, his alma mater. He has also lectured at the University of Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College, Bethel College and I.U.-South Bend. He and his wife, Sarah, have five children and one grandchild.
