1:45 - 5:00 p.m.  |  CLE Program

Digging in their Heels (1 hr. NLS)

Sally Perkins, Story Performer

If Susan B. Anthony and her pals had iPads and Twitter, maybe it wouldn’t have taken 72 years to win the vote. Maybe?? Digging In Their Heels is a high-speed story of women’s battle for the ballot that inspires audiences to keep digging for justice as they marvel, laugh and learn from women who paved the way.

19th Amendment: The Lesser Told Story
(.75 hr. CLE)

Chief Justice Loretta Rush, Indiana Supreme Court

Chief Justice Rush’s presentation will challenge the audience to view the women’s suffrage movement and its aftermath from a different perspective—what the suffrage movement didn’t achieve. Though the Chief Justice recognizes that the movement is certainly worthy of commemoration, her presentation will urge the audience to broaden their lens and reflect upon the suffrage movement’s shortcomings so we can avoid repeating them. In particular, the presentation will acknowledge women of color who weren’t given the recognition they deserve for their participation in securing the 19th Amendment’s passage; focus on how women of color generally were excluded from the suffrage movement’s public presentation; discuss roadblocks that women, particularly those of color, faced when exercising their right to vote after the 19th Amendment’s ratification; and reflect on the events leading to the seminal Voting Rights Act. The Chief Justice’s presentation will also feature a brief conversation with Judge Margret G. Robb, the first female Chief Judge of the Indiana Court of Appeals.

Panel Discussion: Women on the State Appellate Bench - A Sharing of Insight Past and Present (1.25 hr. CLE)
