Honoring Asian Heritage Month
1.0 Hr. CLE/Ethics
About the event
Topic/Speakers: In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, which is celebrated every May, this program featured three Asian-Americans with diverse
backgrounds. Each panel member shared about their trials and triumphs, and gave their take on the many excellent questions and discussion topics we received from registrants.
Sujata B. Chugh, Attorney at Mendrygal Law; Principal at Monon Strategy Group, Indianapolis
Judge Jacqueline Nguyen, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Honorable Mike Witte, retired Executive Director of the Indiana Supreme Court's Disciplinary Commission
About Open Conversations: Racism and Racial Injustice: This program brings candid dialogue about race and culture in the legal landscape. You are invited into these frank, vulnerable, and transparent conversations,
led by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David (a white man in his 60s) and Indianapolis attorney Angka Hinshaw (a young woman of color). The full program includes monthly virtual events, quarterly Res Gestae journal articles,
and emailed resources. Join the Open Conversations email list to receive all of the content this program offers.
Open Conversations hosts Justice Steven David and Angka Hinshaw will again remain on the webinar from 1 - 1:30 p.m. for participants to react, ask questions, and further engage in candid discussion.
About the Open Conversations virtual events: Each month, Justice David and Angka address hard-to-discuss topics with community members. Guests will share experiences, perspectives, journeys, and challenges as they navigate society where
racism has touched their lives and what we can all do to make positive changes in our world. Through Zoom, you are invited to listen to the conversation and engage with others through the chat function, then pose questions for Justice David and Angka
to ask the guest(s). While some insights from the guests will be shared after the program, the conversations are closed to only those who have registered, and they will not be recorded. This allows guests and attendees to be open and vulnerable.
Who might enjoy this
This program is for legal professionals seeking to listen, understand, and broaden their perspectives. This is your opportunity to learn about those hard-to-discuss topics related to race and culture, and ask questions in a safe learning environment.
Legal professionals who have not had the opportunity to be exposed to cultures of color will particularly benefit from this program. Reviews from past participants "So enlightening. The CLE allowed me to have deeper contextual understanding of the increase in racism against the Asian community and a reminder that it is not new. Once again, the CLE underscored that the United States has failed to adequately address historical racism (and its impact) which has real consequences even today." "Ms. Chugh brought out some positive steps for how a judge might use courtroom time." "What a wonderful program to build empathy, provide legal and historical background, and specific examples of how to make our profession more inclusive." "Factual experiences were informative and assisted in the ability to understand racism in a more personal way. Both in personal settings and in professional settings. The statistics by one of the speakers was very interesting in supporting the factual limitations in hiring etc." "This CLE shred light on members of the AAPI community in the legal field have experience and the work that still need to be done to make the Indiana judicial system more diverse." "I am an Asian American attorney, and I feel like there are few in the Indiana bar. It is nice to see the ISBA highlight Asian American heritage in the bar while also addressing a rise in hate crimes against those who identify as Asian American."
