JLAP Discussion:

Hannibal Lecter, Cheap Shoes, and Feeling Like a Fraud

Presented by the CLE Committee and JLAP

1 Hr. CLE/Ethics

About the event

Have you ever felt like everyone around you is smarter, works harder, and does a better job than you do? Or found yourself terrified of making mistakes or constantly believing you are likely to make one no matter how expert you get at your career? If so, you’re not alone. Many legal professionals grapple with what is known as impostor syndrome, defined as “an individual’s belief of inadequacy that persists in the face of information indicating the opposite is true.” Impostor syndrome not only makes us miserable, but it also negatively impacts our physical well-being, work performance, productivity, and competence. This session will generate discussion of the impact of impostor syndrome on lawyer well-being and ultimately on professional conduct, including competence, diligence, and communication, with reference to the corresponding rules. We will discuss the underpinnings of imposter syndrome, explore the damaging impact it has on attorney work product, trustworthiness, and leadership, and provide techniques to notice and address symptoms of imposter syndrome. This session will also provide an overview of services available through the Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program, with special emphasis on Admission and Discipline Rule 31 and JLAP confidentiality.

Reviews from past participants

“This CLE really hit the nail on the head - why perfectionism can breed imposter syndrome. It was great to know I'm not alone and to find practical ways to combat perfectionism and imposter syndrome in my practice.”
“This is probably the best CLE event that I have viewed this year (2021). The information hit very close to home for me. It helped me put things into perspective and realign my priorities. Thanks.”
“As a new attorney, this is the most relatable CLE I have taken. Definitely a must watch!”
“This topic really shed some light on things present in my practice and showed me that I was not the only person/attorney experiencing these things.”
“I appreciated the speakers' practical tips!”
“On many levels this resonated. The story of Gabe MacConaill was heartbreaking and provoking. I was told, before I started law school as a non-traditional mother of a 2 yr. old, that "The law was a jealous mistress" by my mentor's wife. He had contemplated suicide early in his career due to the pressures. I now get what she was talking about. I could relate to the perfectionism the presenters discussed and took a lot away from that. All your topics are timely and relevant. Thank you.”
