Family Law Certification: Pre-Approved CLE

Pre-Approved Continuing Legal Education for
Family Law Certification and Recertification

Article III, Paragraph A of the Standards for Certification and Re-Certification of Lawyers Specializing in Family Law states:

An applicant must demonstrate that he or she has participated in a minimum of thirty-six (36) hours of continuing legal education specifically approved for family law as required by the Supreme Court of Indiana for continued education, within three (3) years prior to the date on which the Application is due to be submitted.

Below is a list of CLE providers and courses that the Family Law Certification Board recognizes as relevant, high quality CLE that will automatically be accepted toward applicants' educational requirements for certification and recertification:

  • Any CLE presented by the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA), Indiana Continuing Legal Education Form (ICLEF), National Business Institute (NBI), or local bar associations which is specifically designated as family law, alternative dispute resolution, mediation, discovery, evidence, juvenile law, trial advocacy, or appellate advocacy.
  • Any seminar presented by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts.
  • Any seminar presented by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
  • Up to 18 hours of domestic relations mediation training from an accredited provider.

Please note: Credit will not be automatically given for courses which are not, from their title, clearly related family law, or for courses such as “Indiana Law Update,” Bench-Bar Conference,” “Annual Updates,” etc. Applicants must specify how many hours of family law CLE were included within each such course and provide course agendas/materials if requested. Approved family law CLE topics include the following:

  • Trial practice and procedure
  • Appellate practice
  • Accounting and financial analysis
  • Discovery
  • Evidence
  • Family law mediation training
  • Guardian ad litem training
  • Collaborative practice training
  • Parenting coordination training

Applicants may also receive credit for other continuing legal education activities such as teaching, completing a course in family law or family mediation, speaking at a lecture series, authorizing a book or article, or participating in a professional committee dealing with substantive or procedural family law. These activities will be reviewed on an individual basis.
