More Information
R. William Jonas Jr., South Bend, Counsel to the President, is a partner at the firm Hammerschmidt Amaral & Jonas, where he focuses in the areas of bankruptcy and insolvency, estate planning and administration, commercial and other civil litigation, and professional discipline. Bill is a member of the St. Joseph County, Indiana State (past president), and American bar associations. He also serves on the board for the Judges & Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP). He received his A.B. from Indiana University in 1978 and his J.D. from the I.U. Maurer School of Law in 1981.

Bill was born in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1956.

Professional enjoyment: creative problem solving and the satisfaction of seeing clients succeed after a problem is resolved.

Your inspiration: I've always had a keen sense of justice and have been drawn to assisting the underdog. The practice of law allows me to endeavor to satisfy those interests.

Why bar association involvement: As satisfying as the practice of law is, it's never been enough to completely fulfill me. Through the bar association, I've been able to serve the public interest, and -- hopefully -- the interests of practicing lawyers and the legal profession. I've also enjoyed immensely working with the civic education program, "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution."

If not a lawyer: I would likely be a teacher or college professor.

Fav hobbies: I play golf and follow college athletics, especially basketball, football and soccer. Fav book or author and current reading: I just finished The Baseball Whisperer, a terrific book about Merle Eberle, the coach of an amateur Iowa town baseball team, which was written by Mike Tackett, who worked with me as an undergraduate at the Indiana Daily Student. Fav vacation spot: anywhere with a beach and a golf course. Fav food or restaurant: I love to barbecue. My favorite food is anything grilled by my brother, Tom, followed by my pulled pork. Picking one favorite restaurant is unfair, but I'd probably go with Janko's Lil Zagreb in Bloomington. Top of my bucket list: 1. seeing my three children successful and happy; 2. acing the 17th hole at Pebble Beach. Fortunately, I've got a lot better chance at #1 than #2.
