Charles B. Daugherty, Indianapolis, Chair-Elect, Young Lawyers Section, is an attorney at the firm Easter & Cavosie, where he focuses his practice on construction law and real estate. He is also an adjunct professor (contract drafting) at the I.U. Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Previously, Charles served as an associate at the Shelbyville firm McNeely Stephenson. He is a member of the Indianapolis, Indiana State and American bar associations. Charles is also an active participant in various charitable and community-based projects through the State Bar’s Young Lawyers Section and the Indiana Subcontractor’s Association.

He was born in Paoli, Ind., in 1983.

Professional enjoyment: I enjoy meeting clients, attorneys, judges and others in the legal community and building relationships. I also enjoy helping clients solve problems and constantly learning new things along the way.

Your inspiration: I was inspired by a combination of my interest in a variety of humanities disciplines, great experiences in undergraduate law-based classes, and encouragement from a college roommate's father, who is an attorney, and then my roommate when he went to law school. They both thought I would be a good fit for the profession and I'm glad they helped me find a great path.

Why bar association involvement: Involvement in the bar association is critical because it connects me to other professionals who face similar challenges and similar rewarding experiences. Other attorneys are the best support group an attorney can have. We also understand the challenges facing our profession as a whole and can work together to face those challenges and find solutions. We need to take care of each other to ensure a bright future for the profession.

If not a lawyer: If I had a lot of natural talent, I would try my hand at professional golf. Being as I have to work really hard to keep the ball in play, I would likely be most satisfied as a full-time professor or, potentially, a business owner.

Fav hobbies: Above all else, I enjoy playing golf with buddies. I also like traveling with my wife and socializing with our friends. Fav book or author and current reading: I've been reading a lot of construction and real estate contracts lately. Those are always fun! Aside from that, I don't necessarily have a favorite author but I like critical history-based books like Guns, Germs and Steel and others that provide insight into our societal quirks such as Freakonomics. Fav vacation spot: Yellowstone National Park. Fav food or restaurant: This is an easy one - pizza and any restaurant serving great pizza. Ale Emporium is certainly near the top of that list. Though it isn't pizza, I am also terribly fond of the “Drew Brees” favorite at the Triple XXX Family Restaurant in West Lafayette. Top of my bucket list: play at the Augusta National Golf Club; travel to Scotland with a group of golfing buddies, attending the Open Championship at St. Andrews and traveling across the island playing various links courses and evaluating the pubs; and attend the Masters as a patron.
