Surviving and Thriving: Compassion Fatigue and

Burnout (2 hrs. NLS)

Loretta A. Oleksy, Indiana Judges & Lawyers Assistance Program
James A. Edgar, J. Edgar Law Offices

6:05 pm   Indianapolis Indians vs. Durham Bulls

This program will discuss how to manage the daily stresses that come with being an attorney and present tips on becoming and remaining a happy and healthy lawyer. Compassion fatigue and burnout can significantly decrease effectiveness at work and in life, and if ignored can develop into depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or a host of other medical conditions. Thankfully, there are realistic strategies to combat compassion fatigue and simple awareness is one of the most important. This session will help attendees to recognize when their work is impacting them in ways that reduce effectiveness and provide strategies for mitigating the ethical issues that can result from being overwhelmed. During the session, participants will also begin working on a personal plan to increase their resilience and minimize their risk of developing compassion fatigue.

The Criminal Justice Section is comprised of prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges. While it is a group of attorneys with seemingly different interests, its goal is to ensure justice for all participants in the criminal justice system. Members strive to achieve this goal through education initiatives, supporting the adoption of and changes to laws that will benefit participants in the criminal justice system, and promotion of the highest standards for all. Annual section dues are only $20. Click here to join!
