The 2018 amendment to Indiana’s Professional Conduct Rule 1.1, Competence, Comment 6, now requires that lawyers keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, “including the benefits and risks associated with the technology relevant to the lawyer’s practice…” Are there certain skills every lawyer should have?  Are different skills and knowledge required for estate planners as opposed to litigators?   How deep must that knowledge go to comply with the Rule?   There are few opinions and decisions for guidance at this point, but certain overarching principles can keep lawyers on track to compliance.
