Alfredo Estrada receives ISBA Trailblazer/Abriendo Caminos Award

 

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 30, 2017) – Alfredo Estrada’s dedication to helping pave the way for the advancement of other Latino attorneys was recognized at the Indiana State Bar Association’s annual awards luncheon in Indianapolis on Aug. 30, where he received the Trailblazer/Abriendo Caminos Award.

 

Estrada is an associate attorney at the Merrillville firm Burke Costanza & Carberry. He is the co-chair of the firm's immigration practice group and a member of the firm’s litigation practice group. Estrada’s practice involves immigration, civil litigation in both state in federal courts and representing municipal and governmental entities. Alfredo is admitted to practice law in Indiana, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District, and the U.S. Immigration Court. Alfredo’s immigration practice mainly focuses on represented undocumented clients with USCIS application/petitions and removal defense in front of Executive Office of Immigration Review, Immigration Court. He is a member of the Indiana State and Lake County bar associations.

 

Recently, Alfredo has successfully advocated for immigrants by lobbying local municipalities to adopt a Welcome City Ordinance. The Welcome City Ordinance requires the adopting municipality to review all current municipal documents to determine whether immigrant status is required in regards to the municipal benefit, increases communication with immigrant residents, and appoints an official to review U Visa certification applications. He has been successful in the cities of Gary and East Chicago and is currently in communication with multiple other municipalities. Alfredo is a former steelworker and a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana. He earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Purdue University Calumet and continued his pursuit of education and earned his law degree from Valparaiso University Law School. While at Valparaiso University School of Law he was a member of the Honors division, a full-tuition scholarship recipient and graduated magna cum laude.
