Kristine Seufert receives ISBA Henry Hurst Judicial Assistance Award

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 30, 2017) – Kristine Seufert’s dedication to the federal judiciary and the public was recognized at the Indiana State Bar Association’s annual awards luncheon in Indianapolis on Aug. 30, where she received the Henry Hurst Judicial Assistance Award.

Seufert is a staff attorney in the pro se office serving the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. She received her J.D. from the I.U. Maurer School of Law in 2004. Following graduation, she worked in private practice before serving as a law clerk for Hon. Sarah Evans Barker of the Southern District of Indiana. At the close of her clerkship, she began her tenure as a staff attorney, later taking on the role of pro bono coordinator for the Southern District. More than half of the District’s civil case load is filed pro se, and more than half of those cases are filed by prisoners. As the pro bono coordinator, Kristine works tirelessly to recruit counsel to represent pro se litigants pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1915(e)(1). In addition, Kristine has implemented a long-range, global solution, Local Rule 87, which states that while it is still the court’s goal to provide representation through recruitment of volunteer counsel, if those efforts fail, attorneys who have appeared in a threshold number of federal cases in the preceding calendar year will be drawn upon to populate the “Obligatory Panel.” Effective Sept. 1, 2016, the judges of the Southern District of Indiana unanimously adopted Local Rule 87.
