Bar members say ‘yes’ to judges up for retention next month

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 5, 2016) – The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) has completed its compilation of the 2016 Judicial Retention Poll responses. Results indicate strong support by ISBA members of Indiana Court of Appeals Judges Terry A. Crone, James S. Kirsch, Edward W. Najam Jr. and Patricia A. Riley, all seeking retention on the Nov. 8 Election Day ballot.

According to State Bar President Mitchell R. Heppenheimer of South Bend, “While by no means a scientific survey, the lawyers who responded spoke strongly in favor of the retention of all four jurists. There should be no doubt that each deserves to remain on the bench.”

ISBA members were electronically surveyed four times from Sept. 13 through Sept. 29. Of the 10,530 members polled, 1,491 cast ballots. “Armed with these results and the valuable information at the Indiana Courts retention website, www.courts.in.gov/retention, the citizens of Indiana can and will make an informed decision on Election Day,” concluded Heppenheimer.

The yes/no retention results of the judges are as follows:

Judge Terry A. Crone: Y-85%; N-15%; 1,369 votes cast

Judge James S. Kirsch: Y-88%; N-12%; 1,413 votes cast

Judge Edward W. Najam Jr.: Y-87%; N-13%; 1,431 votes cast

Judge Patricia A. Riley: Y-82%; N-18%; 1,428 votes cast

Appellate court judges face an approval vote in the first general election that occurs at least two years after their appointment, and every 10 years thereafter. Indiana voters will have an opportunity to cast their ballot concerning the judges’ retention next month.
