Edward D. Thomas Sr., Zionsville, At-Large District Rep., is a business attorney, where he concentrates his practice in complex business and commercial litigation. Prior to law school, he served six years active duty as a paralegal with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps (1999-2005) and as a law clerk for Hon. Cynthia Ayers, Marion County Superior Court Civil Division (2005-06) and the Public Defender of Indiana (2006-07).

He is a member of the Indianapolis, Marion County and Indiana State bar associations, Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana and the Defense Research Institute. He is also active with the Business Law Survey Commission (gubernatorial appointee) and the YMCA Urban Mission Center (member, board of managers). He received his B.S. from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1998 and his J.D. from the I.U. Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2009. He received his M.B.A from Baker College in 2011.

Edward was born in Gary, Ind., in 1974.

Professional enjoyment: I enjoy helping my clients see the "big legal picture" as it relates to their business, answering and anticipating questions that concern them, and providing advice on what they need to take care of now and what can wait. Additionally, I often learn about new technologies and/or industries that I otherwise may never have been exposed to.

Your inspiration: During my senior year in college, I took a course in the legal aspects of recreation. I was immediately intrigued by the prospect of analyzing problems from a legal perspective and providing sound advice to business owners.

Why bar association involvement: The prospect of networking with a broad array of local attorneys with various backgrounds, experiences and areas of practice is quite appealing. Bar association involvement also provides a myriad of practice benefits, including substantive information on practice trends, affordable continuing legal education and client referrals.

If not a lawyer: I would be a serial entrepreneur focusing on the cross section between business, finance and sports. The sporting industry continues to flourish with a projected growth of approximately $150 billion over the next five years and I would certainly figure out a way to get a piece of the pie.

Fav hobbies: Spending quality family time and attending our children's school and sporting activities. I also enjoy watching both college and professional basketball and football games. Fav book or author and current reading: I'm currently reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Fav vacation spot: I've only taken a couple of vacations; however, I lived in Hawaii for several years while serving in the Army and Maui is pretty awesome! Fav food or restaurant: anything my wife cooks; alternatively, Ruth Chris will do. Top of my bucket list: it would be a tie between visiting the pyramids in Egypt and the Great Wall of China.
