What is Indiana Kids’ Election?
On Nov. 8, students across Indiana will elect their own governor, president and senator in a show of active citizenship through Indiana Kids’ Election (IKE), an award-winning mock election program. Sponsored by the Indiana State Bar Association, Indiana Secretary of State and the Indiana Department of Education, IKE is based on the premise that voting is only occasionally done by inspiration, but is more often done by habit.
In order to develop one’s voting habit, IKE provides students in grades K-12 with the hands-on experience of voting in a class or school-wide mock election. Under Indiana law, schools must give instruction on the election process two weeks prior to a general election. IKE helps Indiana schools meet this requirement by providing comprehensive curriculum guides, free of charge, to participating schools. Note: The curriculum meets current state academic standards and was developed by a team of Indiana educators.
Indiana attorneys also have the unique opportunity to participate in this program by volunteering for the IKE Speakers’ Bureau, where attorney volunteers deliver one-hour classroom presentations about the election process, how to make informed choices about candidates and more.
How do I participate in Indiana Kids’ Election?
To participate, sign up at www.inkidselection.com. The Indiana State Bar Association will match you with a participating school near you. IKE is open to public and private schools and home-school groups.
Note: If you would like to contact a school near you directly, you are still required to sign up online at www.inkidselection.com.
When do I schedule my presentation in the classroom?
Once you have been matched with a school, you are responsible for scheduling the presentation on a date prior to Election Day (Nov. 8) that works best for you and the teacher. The approximate length of the presentation is one hour, but will depend on the teacher’s schedule.
Are additional resources available to aid with my presentation?
Yes. You can find age-appropriate resources on the Indiana Kids’ Election website at www.inkidselection.com.
Can I participate more than once?
Absolutely! If you’d like to get the most mileage out of the presentation that you’ve prepared, please let us know if you’d like to present more than once.
How do I get local media to cover my classroom presentation?
If you would like a press release about your presentation to be distributed to local media outlets, please contact Carissa Long, ISBA Director of Public Relations, at email@example.com or 800.266.2581. Also, we would love it if you would share photos, thank-you letters from students and testimonials from your classroom experience.
