Court Newsletter
The newsletter of the Criminal Justice Section, Open
Court, is currently being published four times
per year. The Editor, Matthew D. Barrett
barrett@satmlaw.com
welcomes members to contribute articles and information. Section
members receive the mailings of the newsletter as a member
benefit.
Public
Service Information
The Criminal Justice Section provides a pamphlet entitled,
"Juvenile Justice" to the public
at no charge. It answers questions about Indiana's juvenile
justice system. This pamphlet is especially targeted to a
younger audience. The pamphlet is available through the ISBA
office at isbaadmin@inbar.org

Section
Purpose
The purpose of this Section shall be:
(1) To unite in a single Section of the Indiana
State Bar Association those lawyers and judges who are interested
in and concerned with the system for administration of criminal
justice in the State of Indiana;
(2) To promote high standards of professional
conduct for lawyers, judges and law enforcement officials
who function as a part of the criminal justice system;
(3) To cooperate with the trial and appellate
judges of the State of Indiana in formulating programs of
continuing legal education in the field of criminal justice;
(4) To recommend and support the adoption of
any needed changes or revisions in the substantive criminal
law and penalties prescribed for violations of such law;
(5) To recommend and support the adoption of
any needed changes in the system of criminal justice in the
State of Indiana which will insure to all persons who need
representation in criminal proceedings the opportunity to
obtain competent counsel;
(6) To recommend and support the adoption of
any needed changes in criminal procedure which will produce
just, speedy and inexpensive determinations of the guilt or
innocence of persons accused of crimes and at the same time
uphold the constitutionally guaranteed rights and individual
liberties of those so accused;
(7) To recommend and support adoption of any
needed changes in the corrections system of the State of Indiana
which will insure the safety of citizens of the state, but
at the same time be most conducive to rehabilitation of persons
convicted of crimes;
(8) To recommend and support adoption of any
needed changes in the procedures for probation an parole in
the State of Indiana;
(9) To recommend and support adoption of any
needed changes in the criminal justice system which will provide
uniformity in treatment of persons convicted of the same crimes;
and;
(10) To promote a better understanding of the
system of criminal justice in the State of Indiana and the
individual rights and liberties guaranteed under the Indiana
and United States Constitutions to individuals accused or
convicted of crimes.

Officers
and Council
The Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer hold their
positions for one-year terms commencing at the Annual Meeting
held during the ISBA Annual Meeting in the fall.
The Council consists of 18 members consisting
of officers and three members of the Section from each District
of the Indiana Court of Appeals who serve one-year terms.
