Bio: Carole Silver
Carole Silver is Professor of Law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and Director of the Law School Survey of Student Engagement.  She joined the Indiana Law faculty in 2010 after serving as visiting professor of law and executive director of the Center for the Study of the Legal Profession at Georgetown Law Center. Previously, she was on the faculty of Northwestern University Law School.
Silver’s teaching focuses on the areas of the legal profession, globalization and business law.  She also has been involved in the development of new courses and approaches to teaching, including a seminar on law and social science, a team-based travel course focused on Singapore and various aspects of its legal context, and, currently, a course on globalization and corporate law and lawyering.  In addition to teaching in the United States, Silver also has taught in Korea on behalf of Northwestern Law’s Executive LLM program.

Silver's research investigates the influence of globalization on the work and structure of law firms, on legal education and on regulation of the profession.  Recently, she has written about the role of gender in global law practice, and is investigating the ways in which law school environment influences the experiences of diverse law students.  She is author or co-authored of more than 30 articles, book chapters and book reviews, and a regular contributor and speaker in scholarly and professional conferences and symposia.
Silver has been the director of the Law School Survey of Student Engagement since 2010.  LSSSE tracks and analyzes the educational experiences of law students at law schools in the United States and Canada and offers schools a mechanism for considering how their students' learning experiences compare to those of students at other law schools. More than 180 law schools have participated in LSSSE since its inception, and the survey has generated more than 200,000 student responses, comprising one of the largest datasets regarding law student experiences in the United States.

Silver was a member of the ABA’s Ethics 20/20 Commission, which recently completed a three-year review of lawyer regulation in light of changes relating to globalization and technology.  Each of the Commission’s proposals recently was adopted by the ABA House of Delegates.  She also is a member of the ABA’s Task Force on International Trade in Legal Services, among other organizations.  She recently accepted a position on the editorial board of a new journal published by the Oxford University Press, the Journal of Professions and Organization.
