Attorneys who have practiced fewer than five years may apply for a scholarship to attend the ISBA Annual Meeting Oct. 16-18 at the French Lick Resort. Nominations are due by July 1.
The Joseph T. Helling Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Nancy J. Gargula, Cynthia L. Chandler and Douglas J. Helling to honor their father, Joseph T. Helling, who practiced law in South Bend, Ind., for more than 40 years. Depending on the particular winner, the scholarship is designed to cover the expenses of sending a lawyer and his or her family to the State Bar’s fall meeting – expenses such as the registration fee, lodging, meals and mileage.
In order to be eligible for this award, the applicant/nominee must be actively practicing law in Indiana, admitted to the practice of law less than five years and must also be a member of the Indiana State Bar Association.
The award will be given to those applicants who best exemplify the following traits and principles that embodied Joseph T. Helling:
· community involvement;
· public service, including a demonstrated dedication to work-related endeavors that benefit the less fortunate in society;
· a demonstrated commitment to professionalism and civility in the legal profession and an interest in promoting the profession through local and state bar associations and bar foundations; and
· a dedication to the legal profession equaled to his/her dedication to family.
“By establishing a fund with the Foundation, Mr. Helling’s family has ensured that new attorneys will benefit from experiencing a sense of community among their colleagues,” said Charles R. Dunlap, J.D., executive director of the Indiana Bar Foundation. “It is a great opportunity for the Foundation to help not only Mr. Helling’s family memorialize their father but also help a new attorney participate in this annual event.”
The Indiana Bar Foundation administers this fund and scholarship. Applications are available on its website, www.inbf.org, or by calling 317/269-7864.
